Rare Olympic 50p coins could be worth loads – see if you own it

Collectors are going wild for a special set of 50p coins.

Released to mark the London 2012 Olympics, around 29 pieces were minted to celebrate the event in the UK’s capital. And now since coins are hot topic, after a penny sold for £127,000 at auction, it’s important to check your wallets.

The designs were selected from a whopping number of entries in a public competition back in 2009. Now, a TikTok sensation, @CoinCollectingWizard, with a following of nearly 200,000, is drawing attention to a “valuable” football-themed 50p coin.

In his viral video, he said: “Did you know there’s a valuable football 50p coin you can find? All of the London Olympics 50p designs were chosen through a public competition in 2009 and out of 30,000 submissions, this design was chosen for the Offside Rule 50p.

“The Olympics Offside Rule can be found in your change. Almost 1.2million coins dated 2011 were struck to enter circulation.”

Featuring a clever depiction of the offside rule in football, the coin serves as both a collector’s item and an explainer for those baffled by the game’s regulations.

He added: “The coin features an explanation of the offside rule in football for anyone struggling to understand common sense, I’m joking. But this coin is quite clever at explaining the rules.”

According to the user, finding one of these coins won’t make you hit the jackpot, but it could still net you £30 if it’s circulated or a “very nice” £20 if uncirculated. He wraps up the clip by asking: “Do you have this 50p or have you seen it in your change?”

Have you ever stumbled upon this rare coin in your change?

With 1.2million of these special coins hidden in UK pockets, your chances are high. Nab one and you could earn a staggering 60 times its face value.

After the revelation went viral on TikTok, the compelling clip racked up hundreds of likes and scores of comments. One user chimed in: “I have one,” with another boasting: “I’ve got two.”
