Find out which sport suits your child best with new quiz | Other | Sport

Think your child could have what it takes to become an elite athlete? Take this quiz to find out which sport they should try.

The tool will ask you a number of personality-based questions to determine which discipline they could thrive in following a summer packed with sporting inspiration.

It follows research which revealed British kids have been most inspired to take up swimming, football and tennis after the summer of sport.

A poll, of 1,000 children aged six to 12, found 83% want to start a new sport after watching the events of the last few months, including the Euros and Wimbledon.

While of the 76% of youngsters who watched the Olympics, 79% are keen to try their hand at something new as a result. It also emerged 75% think they have more than enough energy to take up at least two new sports.

The research was commissioned by filled crêpe makers Whaoo!, which has also created a tool to help parents identify new sports for their children to try.

A spokesperson said: “Kids have boundless energy, and the research has shown a busy summer of sport has them motivated to try something new.

“There’s no doubting the Olympics can leave a mark on young people and motivate them to push themselves outside their comfort zone and try something new.

He added: “But not only that, England’s run to the Euros final and elite tennis played at Wimbledon will have inspired children to get out there and be the next superstars for this country.”

The research also found 83% of parents would like their child to try out a new sport, with 67% saying their child has been talking about the sporting events they’ve seen this summer while 52% have seen their youngsters re-enact the sports they’ve seen on TV with their friends.

However, the cost of equipment, keeping them interested and finding the time to take them to new activities were seen as the biggest challenges faced.

When it comes to keeping them energised for their sporting activities, three quarters of parents always try to make sure they have a tasty treat ready for them to eat.

While 81% of children said their immediate thoughts after running around are based on what they can eat, with 59% hoping for something sweet, according to the OnePoll data.

It also emerged children were impressed, excited and amazed at what they saw in the Olympics. But while 45% would prefer team sports, 33% liked the idea of taking something on solo.

Half would rather compete in an outdoor sport like rugby or cycling compared to 30% who would opt for something indoors such as gymnastics or martial arts.

Interestingly, 36% thought some sports were only for boys and others for girls, while 49% disagreed – and one in six weren’t sure. And of those don’t think gender plays a part, 57% were female compared to 41% of males.

A spokesperson from Whaoo!, added: “The research has shown parents are keen to fuel the new interest children have in the sports they’ve seen this summer.

“And quite literally, kids are looking to consume something straight after taking part following major exertion. They also said they were eager to go for something sweet to give them a much-needed energy boost.”
