Gun lover Rep. Lauren Boebert is finally trying to make good on her dream of abolishing the government agency that regulates firearms. The Colorado Republican introduced a bill that would abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF). Boebert has been talking about getting rid of the ATF since at least 2023, when she said she was “waiting to hear a good reason” why the agency, founded in 1972, should exist. ATF officers enforce federal gun regulations and investigate bombings, arsons, tax evasion, and weapons trafficking. Boebert’s stated philosophy on gun ownership is that Americans need to buy more guns and that gun-free zones are the “most dangerous” places in the country. “The time has come,” she posted on social media platform X on Tuesday. “ABOLISH THE ATF!” The text of Boebert’s bill wasn’t available as of Tuesday. It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.
